Drafts Continues

After what felt like an absolute writer’s block for this whole month in regards to the Drafts story, I managed to write more yesterday in one go.

Thankfully, the January entry ended at an excellent point in order for February to kick off without feeling like it was trying to finish a thread before starting a new one. I knew that fixing myself to write monthly, no matter how big or small a chapter, would be a menace for me but it needed to be done.

As the story continues, the more it feels like my character is in a world where things shift and change and yet doesn’t distract from the adventure. The world of Old York starts to peel the curtain and the influence of things like Symphony of the Night, Hades and Dark Souls begins to emerge and I love it. Ronoir’s near-stoic demeanor that isn’t absent of any empathy, Guillermo’s sense of innocent paired with determination and Lusciel’s sense of tender endearment with her subtle insight are layers I’ve been finding myself more intrigued to dig into as I write them. It’s truly a sense of adventure away from the real world — even if it’s just a few minutes.

A college writing professor once taught me that, even if I’m running blank on material, writing something. Anything. Eventually, when you don’t feel so empty and reinvigorated, you’ll be able to weave those dry moments into something more. That is honestly the piece of advice that has kept me going with this story.

Can I do that with FireFrei? In the words of George R.R. Martin, “Yes and no. No and yes and yes and no”. FireFrei requires a special sense of detail, especially since I write everything for that story in pen and paper before I plug it into my MacBook Pro to edit prior to publishing. Drafts also has no artwork as of right now and as a result, the writing will come first, the art will wait.
