Sometimes there’s that one show that you haven’t seen in a long time and want to reconnect. It’s almost like longing to reunite with an old friend. That show, for me, is Spartacus.
I just finished rewatching Season 1 and the show has aged like the best wine in all of Rome. The seduction, betrayal, love, loss, violence and the spectacle; all of it was reinvigorating. I forgot how much Batiatus made me laugh, the vicious war cry and violence of Crixus, the stoic guidance of Onomeaus, the wiles of Ashur’s cunning to the development of Spartacus’ journey for vengeance that transforms to a longing to free his fellow gladiators.
The pace is like a well-written symphony and after all this years, I had only found out that one of the minds behind the show is the same man that did Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess; both of which are classics full of heroism, growth, comedy and wonder.
Some folks fell off after Season 2 since Seasons 3 & 4 had a re-casting of Spartacus and Naevea but honestly, the new actor was picked by the late previous actor and the new actress for Naevea was much better.
Season 2 is a turning back of the clock as it explores how Batiatus became who he was but also how he got into deep debts.
I’ll likely write more on my revisit of the show at a later date. As far as my all time favorite shows, it sits comfortably at the top, with Sons Of Anarchy in 2nd with Game Of Thrones very much on its coattails in 3rd.
